June 2012 Bike Trip Plans- Toronto to Ottawa Via The Side Door!
June 2012 Toronto To Ottawa to Brockville Bicycle Trip Report
I am going to Cuba for the second time, this February, with my husband. On our first visit, we did the loop from Santiago west and this time we are doing the eastern section….Holguin, Moa, Baracoa etc to Santiago. We only have 2 weeks and enjoy exploring so doubt we will make it back cycling, to Holguin. But that is open ended as we will not be booking accommodations ahead of time.
Neither of us are overly interested in going to Guardalavaca and my husband seems to think you can take a back road # 123 through Baguano and joining up with other road just west of Mayari. Do you have any information on this? I have never read a bike report re: anybody going this route.
Btw…..your report was great, very helpful
Janice, I based my route – Holguin to Guardalavaca to Banes to Mayari – on the Cycling Cuba book by the Smiths, even though it was already a decade old when I made use of it. It was my security blanket! Things hadn’t changed much in the meanwhile!
Route 123 definitely represents an alternative and faster way to get to Mayari and Moa. It is a 90 km. ride and looks like the main road from Holguin to Mayari and should present no problems. The only issue I see – and you guys have been there so you know – is the accommodation options when you get to Mayari or if you decide to stop half way. If you stay in a casa particular in Holguin then the owner there will be able to phone ahead to the next casa down the line. FYI – the Smith book does not have info on Route 123 from Holguin down to Mayari.
If you have Google Earth installed on your computer, take a look at the Google Earth view of Route 123 (the Carretera Mayari) to get an idea of the ride. It looks like you’ll be cycling past a lot of farmland and some wooden areas! I can’t imagine the traffic is any different than it was four years ago – it was all but non-existent once I left the towns behind!
I am not sure how many km you put in daily but you’re looking at 90 km from Holgiun to Mayari and 100 from Mayari to Moa.
Enjoy the ride and the scenery! I am getting ready for another island bike ride – one around Tasmania.
BTW send me the link – if there is one – to your Cuba rides and I will include them in my posts. It would be good for potential cyclists to be directed to more up-to-date reports!
